Catania’s fish market dates back to the nineteenth century, and represents one of the most unique fish markets in the world. The market is a main tourist attraction, and offers an extraordinary show of infinite nuances, thanks to the folklore, which may be sensed by passing along the fish stalls . Only by actually trying this experience can one fully understand how picturesque the market is and how it’s always crowded with the incessant voices (the ‘vuciata’ ) of the sellers, which creates an Arab souk-like atmosphere, revoking that of a Kasbah. Since the beginning of the nineteenth century the stalls have been set up in the tunnel excavated in the sixteenth century in the Palace of the Seminary of the Clerics and the walls of Charles V right in front of the Archi della Marina (bridge archways by the port), which were once immersed in the waters of the underlying fishing port, which are land filled today and have been turned into public parks , piazza Alonzo di Benedetto and piazza Pardo.






FISH LAB
Scirocco’s premises is that of an old butcher shop, with white tiles on the walls and meat hooks still exposed to the public. The location underwent a demanding renovation project that combined the charm of details of its history with contemporary furniture, lighting and interior design. Scirocco’s philosophy is that of making the historic fish market of Catania well known. ‘A PISCHIRIA’ (the Sicilian way of calling the fish market), is where Arab and Mediterranean atmospheres blend and Catania’s tradition comes to life in all its fervent uniqueness.
Homemade cooking, offering not only fried food but much and more, wrapped in traditional cones of straw paper, combining quality, tradition and innovation.
